Welcome! I’m Jimmy Orr and I have a passion for working with wood. Wood is my medium of choice
because no two pieces are exactly alike. It is the imperfections that ironically make each piece “perfect”
and truly unique in character. Does this sound like anything you can relate to? “Wood” you like to
know more?...
I began turning pens and bottle stoppers when I was 35 years old. It all started because I was looking for
an outlet to relax and let my mind wind down in the evenings before going to bed. However, it didn’t
take long before turning became an obsession. A few years later, my father, who is a talented carver, gave me my first two carving tools as a gift for Christmas. These tools
sat in a drawer for more than a year before I came across them again when I was cleaning my shop. I
decided to pick them up and see what I could make with them…My initial carving was of a mushroom,
which myself and neighbors thought looked more phallic than fungal in nature. I carved onward.
Two years later, here I am. I have found intrigue in facial structures and the different lines and planes that shape the face. I enjoy the challenge of studying and then carving the realistic features of the human face and particularly the faces of Native Americans. On moment of emotion as well as years of life experiences are frozen in time as I carve the wood into an expression that speaks loudly to the senses of sight and touch.
My inventory of completed projects spurred the development of this website to make my projects available for purchase. Please know that when you purchase one of my projects, you will be supporting a child with hearing loss. 100% of ALL proceeds from sales will go to support children with hearing loss as this is truly my underlying passion and my source of inspiration. I would like to thank my kids, family and friends for their support in this adventure and also to my good friend, Modine Designs for taking the time to build and develop this website for such a great cause!
